Wreck with injuries ties up traffic on Lexington Rd near landfill
A three-car wreck Tuesday blocked traffic along Lexington Road near the Athens-Clarke County Landfill at the Oglethorpe County line. Athens-Clarke County police indicated only that only injuries were involved. At least two ambulances responded to the scene.
Traffic headed eastbound along Lexington Road was detoured to Robert Hardeman Road and Morton Road while police and emergency crews worked the wreck. Traffic headed westbound into Athens-Clarke County from Oglethorpe County was backed up a considerable distance from the accident scene.
Accident involving tractor trailer on Athens Loop stifles traffic
An accident on Friday afternoon involved a tractor-trailer which turned on its side on the Inner 10 Loop at Atlanta Highway. A car was pinned by the truck, but all passengers were out of the vehicle safely.
All lanes of the inner loop were closed for a couple of hours, as leaking of fuel from the tractor-trailer was causing a hazard.
Vehicle overturns on Athens' Outer Loop
Authorities asked motorists Tuesday afternoon to avoid a portion of the Outer Loop.
According to a Nixle alert sent about 1:30 p.m., a wreck occurred between Atlanta Highway and the Clarke County and Oconee County line. It apparently created a traffic jam.
A caller to the Athens Banner-Herald audience center said at least one vehicle was involved in the wreck and that it overturned into a ditch.
Officer Elmer Buddy Christian's Death Hits Hometown Hard
The news of Elmer ‘Buddy’ Christian's death hit Athens and Clarke County hard on Tuesday.

“I went hunting like everyone else; I got his tag number off the car and got on the road and did what I could do to help find him,” said Wayne Barrett, Christian's friend.
Barrett, the owner of Barrett's Towing said he and the rest of his drivers worked closely with Christian on accident scenes and other traffic stops.
“We talked a lot out there on the scene. We'd be working wrecks with him there and there would be a lot of cutting up with him. That is the type of guy he was,” said Barrett..
Car crashes into bank building on Gaines School Road
A woman crashed her car into a bank in Southeastern Clarke County this morning, slightly injuring herself and at least one employee inside the bank, Athens-Clarke police said.
The woman apparently lost control from a medical problem, possibly a seizure, according to police, when her car crashed into Georgia Federal Credit Union, 190 Gaines School Road.
She was not injured but was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center to be checked out, police said.
One or two employees at the credit union suffered minor injuries, like scratches, and emergency workers treated them at the scene, police said.
The woman was driving north on Gaines School Road at about 9:45 a.m. when she lost control of her car, police said.
Jeep found, not Zinkhan
Search ensues, but suspected killer evidently fled after ditching SUV
Police found George Zinkhan III's ditched SUV in a remote ravine on the Clarke-Jackson county line late Thursday and now know that he fled, either on foot or in another vehicle, after he shot and killed three people near downtown Athens last Saturday.
Athens-Clarke police tracked down Zinkhan's red Jeep Liberty on Thursday night after the U.S. Marshals Service detected a signal emitted by one of Zinkhan's cell phones, investigators said.
More than 100 local, state and federal law enforcement officers joined an intensive search that began after daylight Friday in the densely wooded area along the Clarke-Jackson County line.
